Now let’s talk about the three main types of conflict.
First we’ll tackle the most frequent and obvious form of conflict:
MAN vs. MAN.
(Or, for those with a craving for sexual equality, PERSON vs. PERSON.)
In this type of conflict two characters are directly opposed to each other over something specific.
To continue with our use of the first Galactus story, it’s basically The Big Guy against the FF. You might even break it down slightly further and say it’s Galactus against Reed Richards, since Reed is the brains and leadership behind the FF. That’s the primary conflict of the piece.
In comics, this is by far the most common type of conflict. A superhero against an arch villain: Batman against the Joker, Superman against Lex luthor, Daredevil against the Kingpin of Crime.
But this doesn’t have to be a big-ass superhero, world domination, type of conflict. Even if your story is about a lonely Computer Dork pitted against a mean-spirited boss or a Supermodel fending off a handsy Photographer, it’s still a MAN vs. MAN conflict.
