Ego Trip

Our last type of conflict is MAN vs. HIMSELF.

This is an INTERNAL CONFLICT of a moral or ethical nature. (Or possibly an internal battle over a personality flaw)

Any choice that could go against someone’s beliefs is a MAN vs. HIMSELF conflict.

An Amish man must decide whether or not to use violence. A celibate priest falls in love with a woman. A politician suddenly wonders if he should tell the truth for a change. You get the picture. Or, in the case of a personality flaw, it might be a hotheaded superhero, whose uncontrollable rage keeps getting him into trouble.

In the FF story previously mentioned, several characters go through crises of this nature. One such character is the Watcher. He is supposed to be an unbiased observer. However due to his fondness of the Earth beings he has peeped on, he finds himself at odds with his fundamental self. He must decide if he can help, and how much help to give.

The Silver Surfer also experiences a moral crisis. Through the blind sculptress Alicia Masters, he comes to appreciate the beauty of the human race, and the enormity of his actions, since, as herald to Galactus, he is complicit in planetary destructions. Ultimately, he decides to battle Galactus on the side of the humans, and he pays a heavy price. Galactus exiles the Surfer from the spaceways, trapping him forever on a planet of immature and vexing humans.
