Review

Okay, let’s review our types of conflict.

MAN versus MAN
A battle of wills between two opposed individuals or groups, a PROTAGONIST and an ANTAGONIST.

MAN versus HIS ENVIRONMENT
When a character is under an onslaught from his environment, either natural events or situational uneasiness.

MAN versus HIMSELF
An internal struggle of a moral or ethical nature, or a struggle against your natural personality defects and shortcomings.

It is important to note that a good story should include ALL THREE types of conflict. If you can get them all in there to some degree and with regular frequency, you will be well on your way to crafting an interesting story.

Now we come to the ENDING or RESOLUTION phase of our story. This is the most difficult element to accomplish in your story. It’s also difficult to teach because it’s rather intangible. What makes for a good resolution is somewhat dependant on the specifics of each story in question. Next however, we’ll take a short break from our narrative discussion for a few entries about a painting I worked on recently.
