Okay, I’m taking a little break from the storytelling workshop to throw in a little piece about some art I recently completed for inclusion in the Hoverboy one-shot comic, coming out from Mr. Comics in the spring. I want to show you the evolution of the piece from idea to final execution.
The creator of Hoverboy, Marcus Moore and Mr. Comics editor-in-chief Ty Templeton asked me to do a few mock covers for the book, including one that was a parody of the pulp magazines of the 30’s and 40’s. I responded with a quick mock-up sketch of an idea where the notoriously anti-communist Hoverboy is battling the decaying zombies of Marx, Lenin and Trotsky all controlled by Stalin and his book of BlackMagic. The rough sketch is seen below in Figure 1.
The idea was approved, but Ty and Marcus wanted Hoverboy to be featured a bit more and to have a more dynamic pose. I corrected this in the detailed pencil value drawing. At this stage I also scoured the internet for some photos of the commies in question and created more accurate likenesses. Figure 2 shows this stage.
Next, I transferred the drawing to the final art board using a graphite sheet and tracing the drawing down. Then I completed a full tonal rendering of the piece in burnt umber. Figure 3.
Next entry we get to the color stages.
