Here’s more on the pulp style parody cover I created for Hoverboy Returns.
In Figure 1, I began to paint in full color. First I painted in the sky and moon, then began on the foreground figures. I tried to keep the colors bright and garish, in the tradition of the old pulps, even though the rendering was a little cartoonier than the original pulps, to keep the tone light.
Here, in Figure 2, I have completed Trotsky, along with his ice pick, and the main figure of Hoverboy. I have also begun to work on the background Commies. Some people work from the background figures forward, but I always go the opposite way. You should do it whichever way feels right to you.
Figure 3 shows us the complete painting including the spooky tree in the background. Now that everything is complete, all that remains is to add the lettering, some of which was created by hand.
