For the final version of the pulp cover parody for Hoverboy, I first created a logo by hand. In the 30’s and 40’s, of course, all the logos were created by hand and I just couldn’t get the right feel from computer lettering even when manipulated. So I knuckled down and whipped this up. I penciled and inked it, scanned it in, then changed the color of the line from black to a nice blue that would pop on the red background. Finally, I colored the inside of the letters yellow. Figure 1.
To add a little pulpy veracity, I scanned a small corner logo from a real old pulp mag. It was a bit rough so I retouched it a little in the computer.
Finally, I married the logos to the cover image, and added the rest of the lettering with computer fonts. And Viola! There’s the final version! Remember to look for this and lots of other fun parody covers and original comics stories in HOVERBOY fromMr. Comics in the spring of ‘07. Check out other cool Hoverboy stuff at hoverboy.com
