Next I began to rough out the final pages at full size. Some people rough on the final art pages, in light graphite, then add the detail. Others rough out in non-photo blue and tighten up in graphite. As for me, I personally get the best results by roughing out on 11×17 inch bond paper, then lightboxing the images onto the final art board. Heres page 2 of the rough pages.
Next, I place the final board over the rough page on the lightbox and begin the final cleanup with an HB or F pencil. Page 2 of the final pencils can be seen below.
Finally, I am ready to begin inking. I am an old fashioned sort of guy, and mostly computer illiterate, so I still ink by hand. I primarily ink with Winsor&Newton series 7 brushes, #0 and #1brush size. I also have a larger brush for filling in wide expanses of black. I also occasionally use hunt and gillot nibs in the dip pen, but I must confess that these days, for finer lines, I tend to use Pigma markers, usually the 05, 02, 01 and .005point sizes. These are quite black, permanent and waterproof, and even give a bit of line variation if used properly. I use Koh-I-Noor SPECIAL BLACK drawing ink. Here’s page 2 of the inks.
Next time I’ll show you the entire story, inked and lettered.
