Which brings me to one of the key elements of comic book endings and genre endings in general.
JUSTICE
We don’t read comics to see the bad guy win in the end. Sure, the villain may get the upper hand for a time, but ultimately, we like to see that hero get in there and kick some ass!
Even in today’s blacker approach to comics fiction, where the heroes are all freaky and beating up their wives and stuff, the endings still usually contain some sort of victory over the antagonist in question. The bad guy has to be defeated! He may live to plague our hero another day, but for the time being he is conquered, and perhaps even pays some price for his evil deeds.
This is still a huge part of what is satisfying about a comics story. The bad guy gets his comeuppance in the resolution.
Next post, I’ll begin breaking down how I wrote a Looney Tunes story.
